If you’ve missed any of our recent posts, here’s a round-up of what’s been going on over the last 12 month with links to the full news item if you’d like to read more. Articles like these are a great starting point if you’d like to know more about a particular condition, diagnosis or treatment, as well as information about other specialist radiology services. Your radiologist will be able to provide information relevant to your individual circumstances.
Sporting injuries: We began 2021 by looking at common sporting injuries such as sprains, strains, dislocations and fractures and the different imaging techniques used to diagnose them. For example, while X-rays are most commonly used to diagnose fractures and dislocations, CT scans may be used to diagnose problems with the internal organs. Click here to read more about common sporting injuries and how they are diagnosed.
Ultrasound guided injections are increasingly being used in sports medicine to diagnose and treat injuries affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. Read more here.
Ultrasound guided injections: Carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis and trigger finger are among the hand and wrist problems that may be treated using ultrasound guided injections. Without using ultrasound to guide the positioning of the injection, accuracy levels range from 63-79%. By using ultrasound, however, accuracy levels increase to 90-100%. Read more about treating hand and wrist conditions with ultrasound guided injections here and read about treating shoulder problems here.
Seeking a second opinion: In this article we explained why growing numbers of people are seeking a second opinion from W27 after receiving a diagnosis. If you’re considering embarking on a programme of treatment, you might want to take a look here.
Diagnosis and treatment of particular conditions: Throughout the year we highlighted different conditions that we see regularly in the clinic and explained a little about how the conditions are diagnosed and treated. Click on the link to read more about:
- Frozen shoulder and its links to stress
- Treating trigger finger
- Patellar tendinopathy diagnosis and treatment
- Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
- Jumper’s knee diagnosis and treatment
PRP injections: PRP (or platelet-rich plasma) injections stimulate your body’s own natural healing processes. They involve extracting a sample of your own blood which is spun at high speeds in a centrifuge to separate out the red and white blood cells, plasma and platelets. Platelets help your blood to clot and release growth factors. By injecting concentrated platelets back into your body, these injections help to develop new blood vessels and initiate tissue repair. Musculoskeletal conditions that often affect men: In June, to coincide with Men’s Health Week, we looked at some of the most common musculoskeletal conditions we diagnose and treat in men, including shoulder dislocations, ankle sprains and anterior cruciate ligament injuries. Read more here.
Osteoarthritis: The pain of osteoarthritis is caused by a loss of cartilage in the joints which means the bones start to rub against each other causing severe pain and loss of mobility. One of the ways to treat mild to moderate osteoarthritis is using therapeutic injections. In this article we look at injections of corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid (which mimics the natural fluid found in joints). Read more here. As patients are having to wait longer for surgery due to the pandemic, therapeutic injections may provide a valuable way to manage pain in the interim. Read more here.
